Volunteer Applications for Summer Reading

The application for summer reading program volunteers is now available on the library’s website, www.newfairfieldlibrary.org, or if you happen to be in the area, at the Children’s Circulation Desk.  Volunteers must attend one training session out of the two that will be offered.  The first training session will be held on Monday, June 2 at 4 pm.  The other session will be on Wednesday, June 11 at 6:30 pm.  For those who feel “I’ve done it before, I know what to do and shouldn’t have to attend,” please note that we have made significant changes to the program so it is imperative to attend a training session this year.   If you do not attend a training session, you will not be able to volunteer.   The summer reading program will run from June 25 to August 6 and all volunteers have to be in place in order for this program to work.  Volunteers need to be twelve years old and up in order to participate.  Community service hours will be given for the training session and other hours worked during the six weeks of the summer reading program.  Please note that the volunteers do not have to volunteer the entire six-week time period.  They can offer to do “work” as many or as little as they choose.  Our application lists the time periods and hours desired toward community service.  Hours given will be determined upon the number of volunteers.

Bookflix

It is spring and the weather is getting better but sitting down with your children anytime is always a great opportunity for learning and bonding.  Bookflix is a new online literacy resource from Scholastic that pairs classic video storybooks from Weston Woods with related nonfiction eBooks from to build a love of reading and learning.  The engaging way to link fact and faction, Bookflix reinforces early reading skills and introduces children, pre-k to grade three, to a world of knowledge and exploration.  This site contains educational games and is a wonderful resource for educators.  Bookflix is available as a link from our home page and by inserting the barcode from your library card.  Please call the children’s librarian at 312-5682 if you have a problem accessing this site from your home.

Summer Reading

The library staff is busy preparing for the summer reading program which will run from June 25 to August 6.  There will be lots of activities to participate in over the course of the program.  The theme this year is “Catch the Reading Bug.”  Stop by for the fun, coupons, and raffle tickets.  As crazy as it may sound, children do not have to know how to read in order to participate.  Since we believe so strongly in reading to children of all ages, it isn’t fair if we award coupons to older siblings and not the younger ones if they are having stories read to them.  It is a win-win situation for all involved.
