Toys for Tots and Salvation Army

The library has Toys for Tots boxes in both the Adult and Children’s departments.  All new, unwrapped, non-violent toys in their original packaging for children from infant through thirteen years old would be greatly appreciated. All gifts should be dropped off  by December 19th.   We have not had as many donations as last year so we hope that you will look into your hearts and add a gift for a needy child to your holiday shopping list.

Cindi White from Social Services has dropped off “Sharing is Caring” containers for the Salvation Army at the library should you care to contribute to that as well.

Unattended Children at the Library

Parents, please take note.  Children under twelve years of age cannot be left alone in the library per Connecticut State Statute Section 53-21A.  Even if children over the age of twelve are left alone at the library to do schoolwork, please make yourself accessible to them via home phone or cell phone.  We cannot have children waiting outside in the cold for someone to pick them up after we are closed.  This scenario shouldn’t happen any time of year but especially not during the winter season.  Policy dictates that we cannot take responsibility for these children thereby necessitating a phone call to the police.  We would prefer not to place that phone call so please, don’t make that child wait.  Be here before we close and accessible.  We have had instances where children have called at least four to five people before they finally got through to someone in order to be picked up.  Always be available to your children, especially during inclement weather.  Keep your eyes and ears open for weather alerts.  If we close early due to the weather, that child needs to be able to get in touch with someone right away, not five phone calls and half an hour later.  Neither the library staff nor the police (especially the police who have just a tad more important things on their plate to handle), should have to babysit your children.
